Putin promises aid to North Korea after Kim Jong-un rejects Seoul’s help with floods

Russia has promised aid to North Korea following severe flooding that has damaged thousands of homes and left an unknown number of casualties. President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and offered humanitarian assistance after heavy rains led to widespread flooding in the country’s north near China.

Reports suggest that as many as 1,500 people could be dead or missing as a result of the flooding, which has submerged farmland and isolated thousands of residents in North Korea. Kim Jong-un, the country’s leader, has thanked Putin for the offer of aid but stated that his government is already working on recovery efforts and will only ask for help if necessary.

North Korea has accused South Korean media of spreading rumors about the extent of the damage and casualties following the floods. South Korea has offered urgent humanitarian assistance to North Korean disaster victims, prompting North Korea to criticize the reports as part of a smear campaign to tarnish its image.

The alliance between North Korea and Russia has strengthened in recent months, with the two countries signing a comprehensive strategic partnership pact in June. Both Kim and Putin have exchanged visits and continue to enhance diplomatic and security ties.

The flooding in North Korea has caused significant damage and humanitarian aid from countries like Russia and South Korea is crucial in supporting recovery efforts. The situation remains dire and further assistance may be needed as the extent of the damage becomes more clear.
