Grupo 1143, a far-right Portuguese ultranationalist organization led by neo-Nazi activist Mario Machado, had its YouTube channel shut down for violating the platform’s hate speech policy. The group has been accused of spreading anti-Islamic and anti-migrant content online that has fuelled real-world violence in various European countries, including Portugal. Despite facing scrutiny, Machado claims his group is the largest nationalist organization in the country.
YouTube’s policy prohibits videos inciting violence or hatred based on nationality, religion, or immigration status. Grupo 1143, known for organizing demonstrations against the “Islamisation of Europe,” has faced backlash for its extremist views and actions, including using Nazi salutes and brandishing torches during protests.
The Portuguese Department of Criminal Investigation is currently monitoring Grupo 1143 for spreading hate speech. Two members of the organization are suspected to be involved in attacks against immigrants in Porto earlier this year, although the group denies any responsibility.
The platform’s decision to shut down the group’s channel comes after a New York Times article highlighted Grupo 1143’s extremist content. The article emphasized how hateful language on social media has been spilling over into real-world violence in various countries. The move to block the account is a step towards combating hate speech and extremist ideologies on online platforms.
