US-backed talks to end the 16-month conflict in Sudan are currently taking place in Geneva, although the Sudanese army is notably absent from the negotiations. The conflict, which has caused immense suffering for millions of Sudanese citizens, has primarily been between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in their struggle for control.
The talks, organized by the US in collaboration with the African Union and IGAD, are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the violence that has engulfed the country. However, only a delegation from the RSF has shown up for the discussions, while the army has not participated thus far. This absence raises questions about the potential for a successful political settlement and the ability of the US to effectively pressure both sides to come to an agreement.
Guests participating in discussions about the conflict include surgeon and human rights defender Alaaeldin Nugud, regional director of the SIHA Network Hala al-Karib, and Sudanese lawyer and political analyst Ahmed el-Gaili. These experts will provide insight into the current situation in Sudan and offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for resolving the conflict through diplomatic means.
As the talks continue in Geneva, the international community will be closely watching to see if progress can be made towards achieving peace in Sudan and bringing relief to the millions of people affected by the ongoing conflict.
