Televangelist James Robison has denied allegations that he accompanied Robert Morris, former pastor of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, to meet with the family of a woman who claims she was abused at age 12. Robison vehemently denied knowing the victim’s age or attending any meetings Morris had with the family. Morris recently admitted to inappropriate sexual behavior with the woman over 35 years ago.
Robison, the president of Life Outreach International, clarified that he only learned about the victim’s age after news reports emerged. He expressed shock at the revelations and emphasized that child abuse should not be tolerated. Former Gateway elder Tom Lane also addressed the situation, expressing regret for not knowing the severity of the allegations and apologizing for not taking further action to protect the victim.
The victim, Cindy Clemishire, has detailed the abuse she endured from Morris, which included inappropriate touching and penetration. She recounted how Morris began sexually abusing her when she was 12 years old and continued for several years. Despite Morris’ initial claims that the abuse involved only kissing and petting, Clemishire has refuted this, stating that Morris digitally penetrated her.
The Gateway Church Board of Elders has pledged to cooperate fully with an investigation into Morris’ behavior between 1982-1987. They also clarified that they were not aware of Clemishire’s age at the time of the alleged abuse and are committed to finding the truth. Clemishire has accused Morris’ attorney of victim-blaming and refusing her requests for compensation for counseling. The church leadership is now facing scrutiny for their response to the allegations and calls for accountability in handling abuse cases.
