Convicted Moroccan expelled from Italy amidst terrorism concerns after knife attack in France

A 35-year-old Moroccan man with a history of violent crimes was deported from Italy back to Casablanca following his conviction for crimes against people and property. The man, who had been monitored by Italy’s Counter-Terrorism Unit after a knife attack in France where he shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’, had recently been arrested in Lucca for a robbery knife attack in which three people were seriously injured, including one who suffered a permanent facial deformation.

Italian police reported that the man was considered dangerous internationally and had been placed under constant monitoring by investigators following his previous knife attack in France. His deportation was carried out with direct accompaniment by specialised State Police personnel after a court rejected his appeal and authorities refused to renew his residence permit.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed the deportation on social media, highlighting the country’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. This case is not isolated, as Italian authorities have previously deported individuals convicted of crimes to Morocco, citing reasons of state security. In June, a court approved the deportation of an individual involved in cybercrimes, and in 2020, an imam was expelled due to his support for the Islamic State group.

The deportation of the 35-year-old Moroccan man underscores Italy’s determination to address threats to public safety and national security, sending a strong message that criminal behavior will not be tolerated within its borders.
