The Dallas community is mourning the loss of fallen police officer Darron Burks, who was tragically shot and killed in an apparent execution-style attack. The suspect, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, shot Burks while he was sitting in his car in Oak Cliff. Cobb-Bey also shot two other responding officers, Jamie Farmer and Karissa David, before fleeing the scene and leading police on a chase into Lewisville, where he was fatally shot by officers. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia described the shooting as a premeditated attack, noting Cobb-Bey’s social media posts as evidence.
Burks, who had recently transitioned from being a teacher and basketball coach, was honored at a candlelight vigil where community members gathered to pay their respects. Burks was known as an excellent educator and mentor to many students during his time at Texas Can Academy. He had graduated from Lake Highlands High School and went on to study at Paul Quinn College before becoming a math teacher.
The Dallas Police Department has planned a procession for Officer Burks on Sunday, starting at the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office and ending at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements for Burks have not yet been announced. The community continues to grieve for Burks as a memorial outside a police station grows with tributes and messages of support. Dash and body camera footage of the shooting is expected to be released later this week to provide more insight into the tragic events that unfolded.
