Coast Guard and Navy Coordinate Rescue of Woman, Child, and Pets off the coast of Honolulu

As Hurricane Gilma approached Hawaii, a mother, her daughter, and their pets found themselves in a dangerous situation while sailing through the Pacific Ocean. The sailboat, named Albroc, sent out a distress signal, reporting that they were beset by weather and in need of rescue. The Coast Guard and Navy teamed up for a daring rescue mission in the midst of the turbulent storm, with the woman, her daughter, and their pets being safely rescued after days of treacherous conditions.

The Coast Guard initially located the sailboat, but the Navy’s USS William P. Lawrence had to step in due to the worsening weather conditions caused by Hurricane Gilma. The Navy crew successfully rescued the stranded civilians, including the woman, her daughter, and their pets, from the sailboat, which was left adrift at sea with the body of the deceased captain.

The mother and daughter were brought to safety at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, where they received medical care. Unfortunately, the body of the deceased captain could not be recovered due to the dangerous conditions. The Navy and Coast Guard were praised for their seamless teamwork in executing the rescue mission under challenging circumstances.

The reasons for the sailboat being in the path of the hurricane and the circumstances of the captain’s death remain unclear. The successful rescue operation highlighted the professionalism and coordination between the Navy and Coast Guard in ensuring the safety of those in distress at sea.
