Sen. Lindsey Graham expressed support for a means-tested tax credit for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) users to encourage people to have children, but he stopped short of fully endorsing former President Donald Trump’s recent call for the government or insurance companies to fund IVF. While Graham acknowledged the importance of supporting IVF, he stated he would not support mandating insurance companies to fully cover the treatment, citing concerns about potential endless costs. Trump’s proposal to cover all costs associated with IVF comes as his stances on abortion and reproductive rights are being scrutinized ahead of the upcoming election.
Graham, who previously voted against a bill that would have protected access to IVF, interpreted Trump’s statements as a signal of support for the treatment. Despite not fully agreeing with Trump’s proposal, Graham suggested a tax credit alternative and expressed belief in finding a bipartisan solution through discussions with Democratic colleagues.
Sen. Tom Cotton also expressed GOP support for access to IVF services for American families but emphasized the need to evaluate the fiscal impact and affordability for taxpayers. Both Graham and Cotton highlighted the importance of addressing IVF support while considering the financial implications and potential impacts on insurance premiums.
