Two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner and Olympic gold medalist Alex Morgan has announced her retirement from professional soccer at the age of 35, citing a deep connection to the sport and a desire to focus on her growing family, as she is pregnant with her second child.

Throughout her 15-year career, Morgan was a key player for the US national team, scoring 123 goals in 224 appearances and speaking out on issues such as equal pay and social justice. She played a crucial role in the fight for equitable treatment of women in soccer, including filing a discrimination complaint in 2016 that ultimately led to a settlement in 2022, ensuring equal pay for both men’s and women’s national teams.

Proud of her accomplishments on and off the field, Morgan expressed that her definition of success lies in giving her all and never giving up, sentiments she shared with her daughter, who aspires to be a soccer player like her mother. As she prepares for her final match with the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer Leauge, Morgan looks back on a career filled with achievements, including multiple World Cup titles and Olympic medals.

Having played for clubs in the NWSL as well as internationally for Lyon and Tottenham, Morgan leaves a lasting legacy in women’s soccer and has paved the way for future generations of female athletes. As she enters this new chapter of her life, Morgan reflects on the impact she has had on the game and the opportunities she has helped create for young girls dreaming of a future in soccer.
