The Texas Comptroller’s office has announced a record-breaking $422 million in unclaimed property returned to its rightful owners in Fiscal 2024. This surpasses the $344 million returned in the previous fiscal year and marks the fifth time in the last six years that over $300 million has been returned. The total amount returned since Comptroller Glenn Hegar took office is nearly $3 billion. Unclaimed property can include various types such as forgotten utility deposits, insurance proceeds, and dormant bank accounts.
Since the program’s inception in 1962, the Comptroller’s office has returned over $4 billion in unclaimed property. Texas currently holds more than $9 billion in unclaimed valuables through the program. Businesses typically turn over dormant property after one to five years, and there is no statute of limitations for the state-held unclaimed property, allowing owners to file claims at any time.
Individuals are encouraged to visit ClaimItTexas.gov or call 800-321-2274 to search for unclaimed property or begin the claims process. The success of the program reflects the dedication of the Unclaimed Property Division and serves as a reminder for Texans to check if the state holds any of their unclaimed property.
