A suspect has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Texas deputy constable Maher Husseini, who was gunned down while on his way to work in Houston. The suspect, Athir Murady, allegedly approached Husseini’s vehicle and fired multiple shots, leading to the deputy’s death.
Husseini, described as a dedicated community servant who cared deeply for his family, faith, and community, was honored at his funeral as a Palestinian American who strived to make the world a better and safer place. The religious scholar at the mosque where the funeral took place emphasized his commitment to safety, security, and well-being.
Murady is currently being held in Galveston County on charges of evading arrest after leading authorities on a chase and driving his car into Galveston Bay. He is facing a murder charge for the shooting of Husseini.
While the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, authorities have filed a motion requesting a $5 million bond for Murady. Court records do not list an attorney representing him.
Husseini, who had served as a Harris County constable since 2021, was highly respected among his colleagues and members of the community. His funeral was attended by a large gathering of law enforcement officers and local officials, who paid their respects to a man who loved the freedoms of America and worked to promote them worldwide.
