A Facebook post claimed that a photo showed the Georgia school shooting suspect, a 14-year-old boy named Colt Gray. However, the photo in question has been used in active shooter training materials since at least 2015, predating the attack by eight years. The same image appeared in a news clip about Indiana State Police active shooter training and in a training video and manual from Reflex Protect, a safety products and training company. USA TODAY debunked the claim, reaching out to the Indiana State Police, Reflex Protect, and users who shared the post for comment. One user admitted the photo was unrelated to the Georgia shooting after sharing it on X. Lead Stories also debunked the claim. The fact-check sources included Indiana State Police resources and news clips from 2015 and 2016 showcasing the image in their active shooter training materials. USA TODAY has previously debunked false claims about mass shooting suspects, including incorrect assertions about the suspect in the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. The publication is a verified signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network and is supported by a grant from Meta for fact-checking work.
