As the war in Ukraine enters its 924th day, the situation on Friday, September 6, 2024, continues to be dire. Ukrainian emergency services confirmed the deaths of 55 people and injuries to 328 after a Russian missile struck a military institute in Poltava. In response to Russia’s attacks, Ukraine’s air force claimed to have shot down 60 out of 78 drones and intercepted a ballistic Iskander-M missile. Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskii reported no Russian advances on the eastern front for six days and claimed success in the incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.
On the political front, Andrii Sybiha was approved as Ukraine’s new foreign minister. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested China, India, and Brazil could act as mediators in peace talks over Ukraine, while the US charged five Russian military officers with conducting cyberattacks. The US also accused a Russian television contributor and his wife of money laundering to breach US sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine.
In terms of weapons support, the British government announced plans to provide Ukraine with 650 lightweight missiles to counter Russian drones, while the US will host a meeting in Germany to boost Ukraine’s air defenses. Additionally, the US Senate Subcommittee on Investigations will hold a hearing on the use of US-made chips in Russian weapons deployed in the conflict. The support and diplomatic efforts continue as the war rages on.
