Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized JD Vance’s recent comments that school shootings are a “fact of life” while highlighting his record on LGBTQ+ rights during remarks at the 2024 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in Washington, D.C. Walz emphasized the importance of protecting children from gun violence, especially in light of a recent school shooting in Georgia. He called out Vance for advocating for more school security in response to shootings, stating that this should not be accepted as a “fact of life.”
Walz also pointed out Vice President Kamala Harris’ advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, noting that she was among the first to officiate same-sex marriages in the country. He shared his experience as a high school teacher, where he was the faculty advisor for the school’s first gay-straight alliance club, showing his long-standing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition to criticizing Vance and former President Donald Trump for their lack of action on important issues such as childhood poverty and childcare costs, Walz emphasized the need for Democrats to run on a clear plan rather than just hope for a victory. He outlined potential policies that he and Harris would enact if elected, including lowering taxes for working families, enacting family and medical leave, and passing the Equality Act to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Walz urged the audience to have a concrete plan for success rather than relying on hope, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving their goals.
