Pope Francis criticized both former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris over their policies on immigration and abortion during a press conference on his flight back to Rome. He emphasized the importance of Catholics voting in the upcoming election and urged them to choose the “lesser evil” among the candidates. The pope specifically mentioned the issues of immigration and abortion, stating that policies against welcoming migrants and supporting abortion are both “against life.” He called not welcoming migrants a sin and described abortion as an “assassination,” stating there can be no excuses for it. Francis cited Bible passages emphasizing the importance of caring for immigrants and condemned the idea of detention camps for undocumented migrants. The U.S. bishops have also issued guidance for Catholics in previous elections emphasizing the importance of the “threat of abortion” as a preeminent priority. Despite usually avoiding direct involvement in national political elections, Francis spoke out on these issues as he concluded his 12-day tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
