Report shows inadequate training hindered CBP response to Uvalde shooting, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reveals

The U.S. Border Patrol agents who responded to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas in May 2022 were criticized in a federal report for their disorganized response and lack of command establishment. The report stated that the failure to establish proper protocols led to delays and potentially further loss of life during the incident where an AR-style rifle-wielding teenager killed 19 students and two teachers. The Border Patrol agents were described as being in a state of mass confusion and unsure of who was in charge during the chaotic situation.

The Border Patrol largely escaped criticism compared to state troopers and local police who failed to confront the shooter sooner. However, multiple federal and state investigations have revealed problems in law enforcement training, communication, leadership, and technology. Victims’ families have sought accountability for the slow police response in the city, filing a $500 million federal lawsuit against law enforcement.

Two Uvalde school police officers have been indicted for failing to act, while a Texas state trooper who was initially suspended has been reinstated. The report highlighted the lack of urgency in establishing a command center and criticized the decision-making by law enforcement. The 18-year-old gunman was finally shot dead by a group led by a Border Patrol tactical team over an hour after entering the school.

Families of the victims expressed disappointment over the lack of accountability in the report, and they continue to seek justice for their loved ones. The incident has raised serious questions about the preparedness and response of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of students and teachers during such tragic events.
