UN Head Criticizes Security Council for Inaction in Resolving Conflicts in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has criticized the Security Council’s failure to put an end to the conflict in Gaza, calling it an outdated and ineffective system. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera Arabic, Guterres highlighted the council’s inability to address major conflicts around the world, including in Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine.

Despite the council’s shortcomings, Guterres praised the UN’s humanitarian agencies for continuing to deliver essential services to Palestinians in Gaza. He acknowledged the challenges faced by UN staff on the ground due to the Security Council’s inability to bring an end to the conflict.

Guterres also expressed concern about the culture of impunity in Gaza and blamed major world powers for allowing it to persist. He urged the United States to pressure Israel to stop the war and uphold the two-state solution.

Regarding Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, Guterres condemned any prospective annexation and reaffirmed the need for a two-state solution. He emphasized that the expansion of settlements in the West Bank is illegal under international law and called for the end of the occupation.

Despite the obstacles faced by the UN in Gaza, Guterres highlighted the resilience of UNRWA in providing humanitarian support to Palestinians in the region. He called for more support from the international community to ensure the agency can continue its vital work in Gaza.
