Ballet World Mourns Sudden Passing of Renowned Dancer Michaela DePrince at 29

Michaela Mabinty DePrince, a talented ballet dancer who once appeared in a music video for Beyoncé, has tragically passed away at the age of 29. DePrince grew up in an orphanage in Sierra Leone before being adopted by the DePrince family in New Jersey, where she began her dance training. She went on to win a scholarship to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City and had a successful career with ballet companies such as the Joburg Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Dutch National Ballet, and Boston Ballet.

DePrince’s life story was documented in a 2011 film called “First Position” and she also authored two books about her life. She was a humanitarian who worked closely with War Child and used her platform to bring attention to children in conflict zones. Beyoncé hand-picked her to appear in the music video for “Freedom,” and DePrince cherished the experience, even getting to meet the singer and her daughter, Blue Ivy.

Following the news of her passing, DePrince’s family expressed their deep sadness and asked for privacy during this difficult time. Her sister, Mia DePrince, shared heartfelt memories of their bond and creative childhood together. The family has requested that donations be made to War Child in lieu of flowers to continue supporting the cause that meant so much to Michaela.

Boston Ballet, where DePrince had most recently been performing, also paid tribute to her, describing her as a beautiful person and dancer who will be greatly missed. DePrince’s legacy as a talented artist, humanitarian, and inspiration to many will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew her.
