Bradford Named UK City of Culture 2025
Bradford, the second-largest city in England’s West Yorkshire county, has been selected as the UK City of Culture for 2025. The city, with a young and diverse population of around 560,000 people, will host a year-long programme of theatre, art, music, and film events.
The programme aims to celebrate the city’s youth, with a focus on local artists, organizations, and national cultural initiatives. The lineup includes a variety of events, such as a theatre work directed by Bradford-born magician Dynamo, a drawing project inspired by artist David Hockney, and the hosting of the Turner Prize at the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery.
Additionally, events inspired by Emily Brontë’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ and curated film screenings by director Clio Barnard will be featured throughout the year. The programme also includes theatre projects, sound walks, history exhibitions, and classical and contemporary concerts.
Shanaz Gulzar, Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture Creative Director, expressed excitement about the programme, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and the opportunity for young residents to become leaders and changemakers.
The City of Culture competition, run by the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS), selects a city every four years to lead a year-long cultural celebration. Previous winners include Derry/Londonderry, Hull, and Coventry. Bradford’s selection for 2025 is expected to bring significant investment and growth to the city’s culture sector.
