Dallas may terminate library’s mobile hotspot lending program

The City of Dallas is considering ending its hotspot lending program in order to save $619,000 in the proposed budget cuts. The city’s goal was to loan hotspots to GED and English language learning programs, but it was expanded to all residents during the COVID pandemic. However, some council members are expressing concerns about ending the program as it provides internet access to those who may not be able to visit the library in person due to work schedules or other reasons. Councilman Jaime Resendez highlighted the importance of considering the cost versus the benefit to the community. The library director also pointed out that the short-term loan of 30 days does not provide a long-term solution for work or online learning needs. The decision to end the program will have to be carefully weighed by the city council based on community feedback and the impact it will have on residents. This information was shared during a Dallas City Council meeting on Sept. 16, 2024.
