North Korea has conducted another missile test, firing multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards its east coast. The missiles, launched from Kaechon, flew about 400km before falling into the sea, with no reports of damage. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff condemned the tests as a provocation threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula, while Japan confirmed the launch of at least two missiles.
The test comes after North Korea’s foreign minister met with a top Russian security official in Moscow, fueling speculation that the missile launches may be connected to allegations of North Korea supplying weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine. Pyongyang has denied these allegations.
Last Thursday, North Korea also fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles, its first such launch in over two months, testing a new multiple-launch rocket system. The United States, South Korea, and Ukraine have accused North Korea of supplying missiles to Russia in exchange for military and economic support.
The recent missile tests highlight North Korea’s ongoing defiance of UN sanctions imposed since its first nuclear test in 2006. The country’s release of images of its uranium enrichment facility further underscores its continued efforts to advance its missile and nuclear programs despite international opposition. The missile launches have raised concerns about the potential destabilization of the region and the need for diplomatic efforts to address North Korea’s missile activities.
