Hyunmoo-5, South Korea’s ‘Monster Missile,’ Commands Attention at Military Parade

South Korea displayed its powerful Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile during an annual military parade, demonstrating readiness to respond to North Korean threats. The missile can carry an 8-tonne warhead that can penetrate deep underground bunkers in North Korea. President Yoon Suk-yeol warned North Korea of overwhelming military response if it uses nuclear weapons, stating it will mark the end of the regime.

Yoon has reinstated military parades since taking office in 2022 to promote “peace through strength” and strengthen the alliance with the US and cooperation with Japan. The parade featured a US B-1B strategic bomber flypast for the first time and showcased the Hyunmoo-5 missile as part of the country’s defense system.

North Korea criticized the flypast and accused the US of a “reckless military bluff” for sending a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea. The regime has also continued weapons tests and released images of its uranium enrichment facility, defying international sanctions.

The Hyunmoo-5, dubbed a “monster missile”, is positioned on two transporter-erector-launcher vehicles and has a range exceeding 5,000 km. It plays a crucial role in neutralizing North Korea’s nuclear threats and preemptive strike plans. The parade highlighted South Korea’s commitment to maintaining a strong defense against North Korean aggression.
