Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the war has now entered its 950th day with several significant developments taking place on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
In terms of fighting, casualties were reported in various parts of the country, including six people killed and three injured in Kherson due to Russian artillery fire. Additionally, an aerial bomb attack in Zaporizhia resulted in one death and 32 injuries. Ukrainian military successfully shot down 29 out of 32 Iranian-made drones launched in a Russian attack.
In Donetsk, Russian troops advanced towards the center of Vuhledar, a town that has been heavily affected by the conflict. Further captures of front-line villages by Russia were reported in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions.
As Ukraine marked Defenders Day with a moment of silence for war dead, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission highlighted widespread mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russia, in contrast to the treatment of Russian POWs by Ukraine. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General announced an investigation into the killing of 16 Ukrainian prisoners taken captive by Russian forces.
On the diplomatic front, Russia detained individuals accused of supporting “Ukrainian terrorist” groups and released three journalists who had been detained for coverage of a Red Square event. NATO’s new Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized Ukraine as a top priority in his role.
