Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia shocked city leaders and members of his department by announcing his retirement from policing. After serving in Dallas, Garcia is starting a new job as an assistant city manager over public safety in Austin next month. In an interview with FOX 4’s Steven Dial, Garcia discussed his time in Dallas and his biggest regrets.
The Dallas Police Department has named Executive Assistant Police Chief Michael Igo as the next interim police chief. Igo, who has 33 years of experience with DPD, will take over from Garcia on Nov. 1 until a permanent replacement is found. Garcia will work closely with Igo before he leaves for his new position in Austin.
Chief Igo has the trust of the community, proven leadership skills, and experience collaborating with other agencies and city leaders. Interim Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert expressed confidence in Igo’s ability to provide continuity during the transition. Tolbert believes that Igo is the right person at the right time for the assignment.
Garcia will oversee public safety in Austin under his former boss in Dallas, T.C. Broadnax. His departure from Dallas marks the end of a chapter in his law enforcement career, but he leaves behind a department in good hands with Chief Igo at the helm.
