Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes addressed the media to discuss a recent officer-involved shooting that tragically ended with a man’s suicide. The incident occurred after police received a call from the man, who informed them of his plans to harm himself and provided information on where to find his body. Body camera footage shows officers approaching the man cautiously, trying to prevent any harm. However, the man pointed a gun at the officers, leading to two officers firing shots at him. Despite this, the man ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Chief Noakes expressed his condolences to the man’s family and commended the officers for their handling of the situation. The officers took a thoughtful and careful approach, but were forced to respond to a deadly threat when the man pointed a firearm at them. The Fort Worth Police Department has been in contact with the man’s family, who are also struggling with the situation.
The case will be reviewed by the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, as is standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings. The department has chosen not to release the man’s name out of respect for his family. The chief emphasized the importance of mental health resources and provided information for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for those in need of support.
