Police hold University of Michigan rabbi and students at gunpoint

An armed person broke into the residence of a rabbi in Michigan during a holiday dinner with a group of Jewish students from the University of Michigan. The incident occurred during a Jewish holiday dinner hosted by the rabbi, where about 20 students were present. The gunman entered through an open backdoor, stole a bag, and fled the scene without firing any shots. No injuries were reported.

Police identified a suspect and were working to arrest him, with another person already in custody. This incident came at the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the High Holy Days, following reports of attacks on Jewish students near the University of Michigan campus.

Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents have spiked across the country since the Israel-Hamas conflict began, with a significant increase in hate incidents reported in 2023. The University of Michigan is committed to student safety and encourages anyone with information to contact the police. Previous incidents involving Jewish students on or near the campus prompted the formation of a volunteer group to ensure student safety.

University President Santa Ono condemned racism, violence, and hate, emphasizing that such behavior goes against the school’s values. Investigations into the recent attacks are ongoing, and the university is dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
