Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction awards Grand Champion title to steer

Jade Stone, a senior at Stanton High School, made history at the 76th Annual Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction by winning the Grand Champion steer competition at the State Fair of Texas. The 18-month-old steer, Haggard, sold for a record-breaking $181,000 in scholarship money. Stone, who raised the steer on his family farm in Stanton, expressed his gratitude for the accomplishment and the support of his family members. The auction, which featured 3,000 students competing for 604 spots, aims to provide scholarship opportunities for local youth pursuing higher education in Texas. Stone plans to use his scholarship money to attend technical college and become a mechanic.

The auction also saw the Reserve Grand Champion steer sell for $80,000, with funds raised going towards the Big Tex Scholarship Program. The tradition of concessionaires contributing to buy the Reserve Champion steer continued this year. The State Fair of Texas has awarded over $33 million in scholarships and auction awards through the Big Tex Youth Livestock Auction and Scholarship Program.

Stone’s dedication and hard work have paid off in a significant way, with his steer fetching a substantial amount at the auction. The success of Haggard at the State Fair serves as a testament to the value of agriculture education and the opportunities it can provide for young individuals like Stone.
