Israel targets Hamas and Hezbollah with heavy strikes in southern Beirut and Gaza mosque

Heavy consecutive strikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs and Gaza’s civil defense agency reported 24 people killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a mosque in central Gaza. The strike on the mosque occurred near the Al-Aqsa hospital and was a devastating blow as the war between Israel and Hamas approaches its first anniversary.

In Beirut, the strikes sent booms across the city and caused flashes of red and white in the sky, with the Israeli military targeting Hezbollah strongholds and leadership. Lebanese security sources reported that Hashem Safieddine, a potential successor to the Hezbollah leader, had been out of contact after Israeli airstrikes near the airport.

Israel’s expanded actions in Lebanon included strikes in Tripoli and raids in the south. Israeli military spokesperson R Adm Daniel Hagari claimed to have killed 440 Hezbollah fighters and destroyed 2,000 targets in southern Lebanon, in response to the group’s attacks on northern Israel.

The ongoing violence has led to hundreds of deaths, including civilian casualties and forced displacement of over a million people. Protests erupted worldwide, demanding an end to the bloodshed in Gaza and the Middle East, particularly in light of the approaching anniversary of Israel’s war in the Palestinian territory.

As tensions continue to escalate, the presence of the top US general for the region in the Middle East for consultations with Israeli military officials underscores the international concern over the situation. The conflict between Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas shows no signs of abating, with devastating consequences for the civilian population on all sides.
