House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has refused to acknowledge that former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. In a contentious interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Johnson also chose not to criticize comments made by Donald and Eric Trump suggesting that Democrats were involved in an assassination attempt against the former president in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. Rallies were held in Butler over the weekend, where Eric Trump claimed that Democrats were responsible for the assassination attempt, despite no evidence to support this claim.
The shooter in the July incident was a registered Republican who had donated to liberal groups, while the suspect in the second incident had previously voted for and donated to the Democratic Party, but there is no evidence linking their actions to the Democratic Party leadership. Johnson stated that he could not speak to Eric Trump’s comments, insisting on focusing discussions on policies rather than personalities.
When pressed by Stephanopoulos about whether he would acknowledge Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, Johnson skirted the question, emphasizing the importance of looking towards the future rather than dwelling on the past. The interview highlighted the persistent refusal by some Republicans, including former President Trump, to accept the outcome of the 2020 election despite numerous court rulings upholding its integrity.
