Kamala Harris tours North Carolina to assess progress on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts

Vice President Kamala Harris visited North Carolina to receive updates on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts and meet with local officials, families, and volunteers. She discussed a major disaster declaration that unlocked more funds for affected individuals and met with families who had to temporarily relocate due to the storm. Harris also spoke with volunteers at a donation center and assisted in packing supplies for affected communities in Asheville and Morganton.

The Biden administration has provided significant support to North Carolina, with FEMA offering $26 million in housing and other assistance, more than 5 million meals, and over 6 million liters of water. Governor Roy Cooper thanked FEMA for their response, noting the death toll at 68, although the USA TODAY Network analysis reported 228 deaths across the impacted states.

FEMA has deployed over 1,500 workers to the affected areas, with more than 11.5 million meals, 12.6 million liters of water, and other supplies distributed. President Biden has called on Congress to replenish critical disaster relief programs, as the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program is running out of funds. Helene is among the top four deadliest landfalling hurricanes in the mainland U.S. since 1950, with at least 214 people dead.

Disaster politics are playing a role in the 2024 presidential election, as Trump criticizes the Biden administration’s response to Hurricane Helene. Harris has pledged long-lasting federal support for recovery efforts in the affected regions, including debris removal and search-and-rescue activities.
