One person is in custody following an officer-involved shooting in Mesquite, near Poteet High School. The incident began when a man with a knife threatened employees at a Whataburger early Monday morning. Officers later found the suspect near the school and exchanged gunfire, but neither the suspect nor the officers were injured. The suspect was arrested after barricading himself in a nearby home. As a result of the police activity, classes at Poteet High School were delayed until 10 a.m.
Sgt. Curtis Phillip of the Mesquite Police Department explained that the suspect had a long gun and fired shots at officers, who then returned fire. Two officers were involved in the incident, one of whom has been with the department for three years, while the other was in field training. Both officers will be part of a standard criminal and internal affairs investigation following the shooting.
The shooting did not involve Poteet High School, but because of its proximity to the incident, classes were delayed as a safety precaution. Mesquite ISD stated that they would continue to communicate with parents about any updates.
The suspect was safely taken into custody without any injuries to either the suspect or the officers involved. The Mesquite Police Department is still investigating the incident, and the officers will be cooperating with both criminal and internal affairs investigations. The community is urged to remain aware of ongoing police activity in the area.
