Florida causes widespread destruction

Hurricane Milton caused widespread destruction as it tore across the Florida Peninsula, knocking out power to millions, flooding neighborhoods, destroying homes, and causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. The storm made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds of up to 120 mph, and spawned tornadoes that caused further damage in areas such as Fort Myers and Cape Coral. At least two deaths were reported at a retirement community in Fort Pierce.

Tampa Bay experienced a reverse storm surge, driving water away from the shoreline, but state officials warned residents not to venture out into receding water as it would return with storm surge, posing a life-threatening risk. The storm caused over 3.2 million homes and businesses to lose power.

Hurricane Milton also damaged the MLB stadium Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays, and led to the collapse of a massive crane into an office building in downtown St. Petersburg.

Analysts predict that the storm could result in losses of up to $100 billion for the global insurance industry, with insured losses estimated between $60 billion to $100 billion. The storm has driven up demand for gasoline in the state, causing fuel shortages at some gas stations.

First responders were limited in their ability to assist during the height of the storm, and residents were advised to shelter in place and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm passed. Overall, Hurricane Milton left a trail of destruction across Florida, causing significant damage and disruption to the affected areas.
