China conducts military exercises near Taiwan

China recently conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan and its outlying islands, issuing a “stern warning” against what it called separatist actions by Taiwan independence forces. This follows a speech by Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, where he reiterated the island’s resistance to annexation and refusal to be under Beijing’s rule.

China has long viewed Taiwan as a breakaway province and has vowed to politically unite it with Beijing. These military exercises are a common tactic by China to pressure Taiwan, which has its own government and military. The latest drills, named “Joint Sword-2024B,” involved warships and fighter jets.

The U.S. has promised to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, urging China to act with restraint to maintain peace and stability in the region. The Brookings Institution anticipates that Taiwan will be a significant issue for the current administration, with a focus on deepening economic relations, strengthening security cooperation, and elevating Taiwan’s international standing.

Former President Donald Trump had been skeptical about supporting Taiwan, while Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to continue the Biden administration’s approach of maintaining strong ties with Taiwan. Overall, Taiwan remains a key concern in the U.S.-China relationship and is likely to feature prominently in future policy decisions.
