New hotline in Dallas County aims to prevent opioid overdoses

Dallas County Health & Human Services in partnership with the North Texas Poison Center has launched an overdose prevention hotline in response to the growing opioid problem in North Texas and nationwide. The Dallas County Overdose Prevention Hotline can be reached by calling 214-590-4000 and will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Dr. Kurt Kleinschmidt of the North Texas Poison Center and Dr. Philip Huang, director of Dallas County Health & Human Services, emphasized the importance of the hotline as a resource for individuals struggling with opioid use disorder. Dr. Kleinschmidt noted the shift in drug use from heroin to fentanyl, highlighting the potency and danger of fentanyl use.

Dr. Huang highlighted the increase in fentanyl-related opioid deaths in North Texas and emphasized the need for resources to address the issue. While Harris County may have a similar hotline, most of Texas does not have a dedicated county hotline resource like the one in Dallas County.

The launch of the Dallas County Overdose Prevention Hotline is part of ongoing efforts to address the opioid crisis and provide support to individuals in need. With services available in both English and Spanish, the hotline aims to connect individuals with specialists who can provide guidance and assistance in navigating the challenges of opioid use disorder.
