FEMA temporarily halted aid operations in parts of western North Carolina due to threats targeting government workers. The threats caused FEMA employees to stop accepting in-person applications for federal assistance in some mountain communities. Operations resumed in Ashe County on Monday. In Rutherford County, operations were halted and moved due to threats from an armed militia. FEMA workers have been pulled back from going door to door and are working out of Disaster Recovery Centers to ensure security. The agency is combating misinformation and conspiracy theories circulating online. FEMA has debunked claims of seizing land, providing only $750 to storm survivors, and restricting airspace. Administrator Deanne Criswell expressed concern that misinformation is causing fear among individuals who may not apply for assistance. Despite the challenges, FEMA continues to support communities impacted by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The agency is working with local law enforcement to assess its security posture and ensure the safety of both staff and disaster survivors.
