Dallas County Elections conducted a third test of its voting machines on Thursday in response to concerns raised by Republicans about the accuracy of the machines. The issue was originally discovered on Sept. 18 during testing, but was promptly fixed. The Texas Secretary of State’s Office also conducted a test of the machines and confirmed that the issue had been resolved. Despite this, Republicans continued to express concerns, leading to the third test. Some Democrats, such as Senator Nathan Johnson, believe that these repeated tests are undermining the integrity of the election process.
During a Texas Senate committee meeting, poll workers testified about the error that was found in the machines, which affected both mail-in and in-person ballots. Republican Senators Bob Hall and Tan Parker, along with Democrats Royce West and Johnson, observed the testing, which lasted for over three hours. Johnson and West expressed frustration with the continued testing, attributing it to a lack of trust in the system, fueled in part by former President Donald Trump questioning the fairness of elections.
Despite the ongoing scrutiny, early voting in Dallas County is set to begin on Monday at 7 a.m. Overall, the repeated testing of the machines and the concerns raised by Republicans have brought attention to the issue of election integrity in Texas as the 2024 Election approaches.
