Paxton files lawsuit against doctor for providing gender transition care to minors

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Dr. May Lau, accusing her of prescribing hormones to minors for the purpose of transitioning their biological sex, in violation of the state’s Senate Bill 14. The state is seeking more than $1 million in damages and injunctions against Lau’s conduct. SB 14 bans gender modification surgeries and the prescription of puberty blockers for minors, with penalties for violating physicians, including potential loss of medical licenses.

The lawsuit alleges Lau prescribed testosterone to teenage biological females before and after the ban took effect, instructing them to fill prescriptions despite the law. Paxton claims the prescriptions were for transitioning purposes, and accuses Lau of using false diagnoses to cover up gender transition treatments. Lau’s employer, UT Southwestern, denied the allegations.

While major medical associations support gender-affirming care for transgender youth, some express the need for more research on the long-term effects of treatments. The ACLU criticized Paxton’s lawsuit, calling it a violation of doctors’ medical judgment and families’ rights.

This lawsuit is part of a broader effort by the Texas GOP to limit transgender health care for minors, which they consider dangerous and potentially harmful. Democrats argue that such bans infringe on parental rights and deny necessary medical care. It remains to be seen how the court will proceed with this case and what implications it may have for the treatment of transgender minors in Texas.
