Ryan Routh, who is accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump, has requested a different federal judge for his trial in Florida because Trump appointed and praised the current judge assigned to the case. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who dismissed charges against Trump for hoarding classified documents, was praised by Trump as a “very highly respected” and “very smart” judge. Routh’s lawyers argued that Trump’s praise may create an appearance of partiality in the public’s mind. The request for a new judge has not been ruled on yet.
Routh is charged with hiding at Trump International Golf Course and attempting to assassinate Trump while he played golf, until being chased away by a Secret Service agent. He was then pulled over by local authorities and faces federal charges including attempted assassination, possession of a firearm in a crime of violence, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Routh has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case presents a unique situation due to the relationship between Trump, the current judge, and the accused, making the request for a new judge a significant legal development in the trial process.
