Historical Shots Captured by the Late UK Photographer Paul Lowe: A Visual Journey

Renowned British war photographer Paul Lowe has tragically passed away at the age of 60 while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Lowe covered some of the most significant historical moments of the 20th century, including the fall of the Berlin Wall and Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. However, his work during the Yugoslav Wars, particularly the siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996, is considered some of his most enduring and impactful.

Unlike other war photographers who came and went from the Balkans in the 1990s, Lowe chose to stay in Sarajevo and Bosnia, dedicating himself to helping the post-war society reconcile with the trauma they had experienced. His photographs offer a powerful and honest look into the realities of conflict, despair, and the resilience of humanity.

Lowe’s untimely passing has left a void in the world of war photography and peacebuilding. His work will continue to serve as a reminder of the importance of bearing witness to the atrocities of war and striving for peace. The legacy of Paul Lowe, born on November 6, 1963, and passing on October 12, 2024, will forever live on through his profound and impactful images.
