North Texas mother, Morgan Hibbard, recently underwent surgery for a life-threatening pregnancy complication called placenta accreta, where the placenta invades the wall of the uterus. She received nearly 5 liters of blood during the procedure and is now doing well, along with her baby. Placenta accreta is one of the leading causes of maternal death during delivery and is on the rise in the U.S., affecting 1 in every 300 pregnancies. The risk for the condition increases for mothers who have had c-sections in previous pregnancies.
Morgan, a former labor and delivery nurse, noticed signs of the condition early on in her third pregnancy. With the help of specialist Dr. Robert Cohen, she underwent a difficult procedure but recovered successfully. Her husband, Trent, credits Dr. Cohen with saving Morgan’s life and believes that seeking specialized care was crucial in their case. The family is now urging other moms with the diagnosis to do the same.
Their baby, Hollis, was born prematurely at 34 weeks but is now thriving at 11 weeks old. Dr. Cohen emphasizes the importance of specialized care for placenta accreta patients, as the mortality rate for the condition is 4 to 7%, but can be lower with the right medical attention. The National Accreta Foundation reports that the rate of placenta accreta in the U.S. has increased along with the rate of c-sections.
Morgan and her family are sharing their story to raise awareness and offer hope to others facing similar challenges. They hope that by speaking out, they can help save lives and prevent further complications from placenta accreta.
