Serial burglar sentenced to 37 years after two deportations

The leader of a burglary ring, Sergio Cardenas-Salinas, from Honduras, has been sentenced to 37 years in prison by Collin County jurors. The ring, consisting of Cardenas-Salinas and eight others from Central and South America, targeted immigrant families in cities like Plano, Prosper, and McKinney. They believed these families kept more cash, gold, jewelry, and other valuables in their homes, making them easy targets. Cardenas-Salinas, who had been deported from the U.S. twice, pleaded guilty to leading this criminal operation.

Prosecutors stated that the group based in Houston, traveled to Collin County specifically to target residents of Asian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern descent, as they believed these families kept extra amounts of cash and valuables in their homes. Ten families in Collin County were victimized before Plano police detectives used security footage to identify the suspects, leading to their arrest in September of last year.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis expressed outrage at the exploitation of legal migrants and citizens in the community, who came to the country seeking safety and opportunity. One victim, an immigrant from India, had $20,000 worth of items stolen from his home in Plano. The jury found Cardenas-Salinas guilty and sentenced him to 37 years in prison, with the fate of the other eight suspects still pending.

This case highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable communities from criminal exploitation and upholding justice for those who seek a better life in the United States.
