Beloved Baywatch actor Michael Newman, who had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2006, passed away from heart complications on October 20. The news was confirmed by his close friend Matthew Felker. Newman, who played the character Newmie on Baywatch from 1989 to 2000, was 68 years old at the time of his death.
Felker paid tribute to his friend on Instagram, describing Newman as a real-life hero and a fierce competitor. The two had met five years ago while working on a Baywatch documentary miniseries together. Felker shared a poignant moment before Newman’s passing when the actor, though mostly unconscious, woke up and humorously remarked “you’re just in time.”
Newman was the only member of the Baywatch cast who had real-life experience as a Los Angeles County lifeguard and continued to work as a firefighter for L.A. County even after the show ended. He was also open about how his Parkinson’s diagnosis had made him reevaluate his life and cherish the time he spent with his family and friends.
Newman is survived by his wife Sarah and their children Chris and Emily. His death has cast a shadow over Hollywood, with many mourning the loss of a talented actor and a beloved member of the entertainment community. Newman’s impact on the industry will not be forgotten, with fans remembering him for his dedication to his craft and his courageous battle against Parkinson’s disease.
