Dallas Fire-Rescue Captain Charles Abney was honored with the National Firefighter Hero Award on National First Responders Day. Abney, a veteran firefighter of 16 years, has specialized in high-risk swift water rescues for 15 years and leads the water rescue team for Texas A&M Task Force 1.
Abney received the award for his heroic efforts during Hurricane Beryl, where he coordinated life-saving rescue operations in the Houston area and beyond. Despite his crucial role in saving lives, Abney remained humble and credited his fellow firefighters for the successful operations.
The ceremony, held in New York’s Time Square, recognized 11 firefighters from across the country for their extraordinary service. The First Responders Children’s Foundation, which established after 9/11 to support families of first responders, presented the award to Abney.
Abney acknowledged the hard work and dedication of his team, both in Dallas and on the task force, emphasizing that he was just one part of a larger group effort. He expressed gratitude for being able to lead and support his colleagues during critical moments.
As the foundation honored first responders on National First Responders Day, Abney’s recognition highlighted the courageous and selfless work that these individuals carry out every day. The foundation aims to provide support and resources to families of first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.
