Israeli airstrikes in east Lebanon result in over 60 fatalities

Israeli strikes in eastern Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people and injuries to around 58 others, according to the country’s health ministry. The attacks targeted various cities and towns in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, with casualties reported in Baalbeck province as well. In Sahl Allak, 16 people were killed, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue. In Ramm, an Israeli airstrike killed nine people, including a mother and her four children. Another strike in the outskirts of Gouraud Barracks Camp claimed six lives, and in Hellaniyeh two people were killed.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed his Lebanese counterpart to London and expressed condolences for the deaths caused by the Israeli attacks. More than 2,700 people have been killed and nearly 12,600 wounded in a year of fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, with a quarter of the casualties being women and children.

Starmer and Prime Minister Najib Mikati agreed that an immediate cease-fire was necessary to protect civilians and critical infrastructure. The need for all parties to de-escalate and work towards a long-term, sustainable peace in the Middle East was also emphasized. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, indicated that the military effort in Lebanon would end shortly. Mayor Bachir Khodr of Baalbeck described the attacks as the most violent day in the region since the beginning of the aggression.
