Texas Bar Association withdraws lawsuit against Attorney General Ken Paxton regarding 2020 election dispute

The State Bar of Texas has decided to drop efforts to discipline Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton over allegations that his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results amounted to professional misconduct. This decision brings an end to a yearslong attempt to potentially sanction Paxton over false claims of fraud that were made when he filed a lawsuit questioning Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump.

The move to drop the lawsuit against Paxton comes after the Texas Supreme Court ruled that Paxton’s top deputy could not be sanctioned over similar accusations. The State Bar of Texas referenced this ruling in their decision to drop the case against Paxton.

Paxton has consistently denied the accusations against him and has claimed they are politically motivated. The bar complaint alleged that Paxton misrepresented facts to the U.S. Supreme Court in his lawsuit challenging the election.

The potential sanctions against Paxton could have ranged from a written admonition to a suspension or disbarment. These sanctions were among several legal issues that Paxton had been facing, including criminal accusations of securities fraud and corruption accusations in an impeachment trial in the Texas Senate.

Neither the State Bar of Texas nor representatives for Attorney General Ken Paxton have immediately responded to requests for comment on this decision.
