Mexican President Speaks on Proposed Renaming of Gulf of Mexico – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Responds to Trump’s Executive Order Renaming Gulf

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke out against President Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Trump filed the order “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” also renaming Mount Denali to Mount McKinley.

During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum stated that Trump can call the Gulf whatever he wants in the US, but in Mexico and the rest of the world, it will continue to be known as the Gulf of Mexico. Trump’s order, which only renames the portion of the gulf within the US marine boundary, has caused controversy.

In his order, Trump highlighted the importance of the Gulf of Mexico to the US economy, mentioning its abundant natural resources and wildlife. He directed the Geographic Names Information System to remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico and add the Gulf of America, citing its significance to American fisheries, tourism, and the maritime industry.

Despite Trump’s order, Sheinbaum’s response reflects Mexico’s commitment to maintaining the traditional name of the Gulf of Mexico. The controversy surrounding the renaming raises questions about the impact of political decisions on geographical and historical identities. Trump’s directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America has sparked debate and opposition from Mexico and the international community.
