A student was prevented from bringing a gun onto the Legacy High School campus in Mansfield thanks to an AI weapons detection system. The system, installed by the Mansfield ISD, alerted staff of a handgun inside a student’s bookbag. The student was arrested, but there is no indication of their intentions or any specific threat made. The Evolv system combines weapons detection sensors with artificial intelligence, monitoring both front and alternative entrances to ensure a secure campus. The school district decided to install the system after a 2021 shooting at a local high school. The expense of the system, about $40,000 a year, is seen as a worthwhile investment in the safety and security of the students and staff. The school officials are thankful for the technology that helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation. It remains unclear why the student brought the weapon to school and whether they have a history of disciplinary actions. This incident highlights the importance of implementing advanced safety measures in schools to prevent potential threats.
