Government Devices in Texas No Longer Allowed to Use DeepSeek, RedNote, or Lemon8

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken a strong stance against social media and AI apps affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by banning them on government-issued devices. This ban includes popular apps such as TikTok, DeepSeek, Lemon8, RedNote, Moomoo, Tiger Brokers, and Webull.

Abbott stated that Texas will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to infiltrate critical infrastructure through these apps, as they pose a security risk to the state. The decision to expand the ban comes as these Chinese-made apps have seen a significant spike in popularity.

DeepSeek, an AI model, saw a massive increase in website visits from 300,000 to 6 million in one week, prompting President Donald Trump to call it a “wake-up call” for American companies. Similarly, RedNote, a video-focused social network similar to TikTok, experienced a surge in popularity but saw a drop of around 50% when TikTok returned after a blackout.

President Trump recently signed an executive order giving TikTok 75 days to find a buyer that is not Chinese-owned, with reports suggesting interest from companies like Oracle and Microsoft. This ban by Governor Abbott aligns with a growing concern over Chinese influence in American technology and highlights the ongoing tensions between the two countries.

As Texas joins over 30 other states in banning these Chinese apps, the decision underscores the importance of national security and data privacy in the face of foreign threats.
