NYC groundhog Staten Island Chuck predicts the weather: Did he see his shadow?

Staten Island Chuck, New York’s weather-predicting groundhog, has declared that spring is on the way after making his forecast on Groundhog Day. Chuck, who resides at the Staten Island Zoo, has been making predictions since 1981 and has an 85% accuracy rate. His forecast was livestreamed on the Staten Island Zoo Facebook Page, where he predicted an early spring for 2025. Groundhog Day is celebrated on Feb. 2, which originates from the Christian festival of Candlemas, marking the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. The tradition of using animals to predict the weather dates back to Europe, where the weather on Candlemas determined the rest of winter. When German immigrants arrived in America, they found the groundhog in Pennsylvania to be similar to the hedgehog in their home country, leading to the importance of the groundhog’s prediction each year. Staten Island Chuck is not the only famous groundhog, with other notable forecasters such as Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, General Beauregard Lee in Georgia, and Buckeye Chuck in Ohio. Groundhog Day festivities bring attention to these iconic animals and their predictions, bringing joy and excitement to communities across the country.
