Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against social media platform TikTok, accusing them of deceptive marketing practices that expose minors to inappropriate and explicit content. Paxton alleges that TikTok falsely promotes its app as safe for children while routinely showing them inappropriate material. The lawsuit claims that TikTok engages in this deception to maintain its age rating in app stores. Paxton stated that companies cannot risk the health of Texas children by lying about the products they offer. An investigation by Paxton’s office found a plethora of videos on TikTok related to drugs, nudity, alcohol, and profanity.
This is not the first time Texas AG has taken legal action against TikTok. A previous lawsuit accused the platform of sharing and selling minors’ personal information. TikTok, a major social media platform in the U.S., is currently facing increased scrutiny in the Supreme Court, with a potential ban looming over the app. Arguments are scheduled to be heard on Friday regarding a law that would require TikTok to be sold to a U.S. owner or face a ban. This lawsuit adds to the growing legal challenges facing TikTok, as more concerns about the platform’s content and practices come to light. The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for the future of TikTok in the U.S. as the debate over its safety for minors continues.
